Teks deskriptif (descriptive text) adalah teks yang digunakan untuk menggambarkan tempat, orang, atau benda tertentu. Teks ini hampir sama dengan teks report. Ciri yang membedakan keduanya adalah descriptive text fokus pada hal yang spesifik. Sementara itu, report text fokus pada hal yang lebih umum. 1. Goal/Purpose of Text 

To describe a particular phenomenon of people, thing, place and landscape.

(Tujuan teks untuk mendeskripsikan ciri-ciri seseorang, benda, tempat tertentu dan pemandangan.)

2. Generic Structure 

a. Identification : Introduce who, where, or what is being described.

b. Description :

    - Part : size, volume, body

    - Quality : standard, superiority

    - Character : attitude, behaviour, act

3. Language Features

a. Pronouns : I, you, he, she, we, they.

b. Nouns : book, table, shirt, chair.

c. Noun Phrases : green house, global warming, white house.

d. Adjectives : handsome, beautiful, lazy, clever, smart, hot.

e. Preposition : in, on, at, in front of, under, beside, behind.

f. Adverbs : now, happily.

g. Linking verbs : is, am, are.

h. Present tense : write, come, finish, visit.

i. Attribute : has, have

Sebuah teks dapat dikategorikan ke dalam jenis deskriptif apabila berisi penjabaran lengkap dan mendetail dari suatu hal, baik orang, binatang, barang, tempat atau peristiwa. Teks descriptif umumnya ditandai dengan penggunaan istilah-istilah teknis tentang topik yang sedang dibahas.

Contoh Descriptive Text :

                             Lesser Slow Loris (Nycticebus Pygmaeus)

The Lesser Slow Loris is a mammal which can clamp onto branches for long period of time. To help it do this, the Loris has a network of blood vessels, called rate mirabile in its forearms and shanks.

It is a small mammal which is 7-10 inches long (175-250 mm) and can weigh as much as 12 ounces or 340 grams. Being nocturnal, the loris has large round eyes. The Loris has no tail but has broad grasping feet. On its second toe, it has a sharp claw. It also has an enlarged thumb and a reduced index finger.

The Lesser Slow Loris is a plump animal with soft, thick fur ranging in color from light brown-grey to deep reddish-brown with a dark stripe down the back and neck. It has a long snout with comb like front teeth which are used in grooming.

It is found in Southern Asia, Vietnam, Borneo, and Sumatra. As it is tree-living, it is restricted to tropical rain forest. The diet of the Loris is made up fruit and leaves, tender shoots, insects, birds, small mammals, and reptiles. It is nocturnal and sleeps by day, rolled up in a ball.
